Candles4Ukraine campaign launch.
The Rotary Club of Haworth & Worth Valley, together with their neighbours the Rotary Club of Keighley, are launching a joint initiative to provide winter heat for the people in war-torn Ukraine.
The campaign is called ‘Candles4Ukraine’ and is based on an appeal for people to donate candle wax for export to the Ukraine.
Three collection points have already been established, two in Keighley – Micro Media (09.00hrs until 17.00hrs) on Cavendish Street and St Andrew’s Church, North Street (10.00hrs – 16.00hrs) and one in Haworth at St Michael and All Angel’s Church, Church Street (10.00hrs until 16.00hrs).
What the two clubs are seeking is for people to collect the wax from candles once they have finished burning them and drop it into the collection boxes. After each box is filled the Rotarians will collect the wax and arrange for its delivery to Ukraine.
Gary Gardner, a Past President of the Haworth & Worth Valley club, said: “Like so many other people our members have been touched by the plight of the Ukrainian people and we wanted to do something more to help.
“We’ve already started to collect used candle wax and we’ve received donations from Haworth Parish Church as well as from as far away as Blackburn Cathedral.”
Bernadine Maloney, President of the Keighley Rotary Club, said: “We hope that by the district’s two Rotary Clubs working together we can collect sufficient candle wax to make a difference to some Ukrainian families who are doing their best to survive the winter.
“We are appealing to the warm-hearted people of both the Keighley and Worth Valley communities to support this very worthy cause.”
Rotarians around West Yorkshire have helped ship two tons of Candle wax to Ukraine.
Both the Haworth & Worth Valley and Keighley clubs have already been involved in shipping humanitarian aid to Ukrainians still in their own country and refugees who have been forced to flee the on-going war.
